INTERNET SAFETY PLAN

INTERNET SAFETY PLAN

The internet is increasingly risky with many new threats emerging every day. Many people use the internet everyday to learn, research, shop, buy, bank, invest, share photos, play games, download movies and music, connect with friends, meet new people, and engage in a host of other activities. However there are some steps that can be taken to prevent increasing risk.
1.      The computer should be placed in a place where everyone can have access of it in the home. Where you place the computer is an important decision. Limit the hours the children spend on the computer and install. computer security software with parental controls.
2.      Parents should set boundaries such as the kinds of websites that are appropriate to visit, the chat rooms and forums that are appropriate to use and The kinds of things your children can discuss online and language that is considered inappropriate.
3.      There should be rules such as never reveal your passwords, never reveal phone numbers or addresses, never post information that reveals your identity, never post inappropriate photos or ones that may reveal your identity (for example: city or school names on shirts), never share any information with strangers met online, never meet face-to-face with strangers met online, never open attachments from strangers. Place rules next to computer.
4.      Children should sign an agreement indicating that they understand the appropriate computer use.
5.      Make sure you have robust security software that protects your computer against viruses, hackers, and spyware. It should also filter offensive content, pictures, and websites. This software should be updated frequently, as new threats are emerging daily.
6.      Parental controls should be used.
7.       Remind children that people they meet online are strangers. Parents should read children’s instant messaging conversations to make sure they aren’t being pursued by an online predator
8.      The family should create strong passwords. Password should be change from time to time. Don’t share passwords.
some ways I could keep my students safe on the internet is by having a lecture about internet safety. This would include letting them know the importance of not giving out their password to anyone and also a step by step procedure on how they could block their personal information about themselves on social network such as Facebook. They would be reminded that a stranger online is like a stranger in person so certain information should not be given to that person for example your address or phone number. I would draw their attention that some sites are blocked and it blocked for their protection or because it is not age appropriate. I would also give them some tips on making sure that the information they find on the web is correct information. Bad comment about anyone is not permitted and they should also remember this quoting from the bible "do unto others as you would like them to to unto you" and last but not least they would be advised that plagiarism would not be accepted and I would state what plagiarism is for those who don't know.
The more you know, the safer you will be.
